Self-improvement is a dream that we all have at the start of the year.

From the weight loss goals to the financial independence goals, we’ve all been there. But how many of us actually get to say that we’ve completed our resolutions?  Well, research suggests that only 9.2% of all resolution-makers felt that they’ve been successful in sticking through with their goals!

Be part of the 9.2% who achieve their goals. We list down the most common New Year Resolutions and tell you how to achieve them!

  1. Save Money

Money makes the world go round. Saving money is at the top of the list in every new year resolution. Statistics show that up to 42.1 % of all yearly resolutions are related to saving money – after all, think of how the holiday you could go on with the price of a new iPhone.

This could be you this time, next year.

Lifehack: Get a coin purse
With a coin purse, there won’t be space to insert your debit or credit card which will limit you to only using cash during a transaction. Research suggests that consumers tend to overspend when they bring their cards out. With the plastic dulling the feeling of loss that comes with exchanging cash, we don’t think twice about swiping that card on the register.

So do yourself a favour, get a tiny wallet or a coin purse and keep your transactions to cash.

  1. Lose Weight

Look good for the next festive season. It’s easy enough to say that you’ll start a fitness regime or keep to eating healthy for the first week or so, but doing it is a whole different peak to conquer.

For starters, learning about nutrition and being aware of what you eat helps.

Lifehack: A motivational water bottle

Water is your bff on your weight loss journey. It’s been found that drinking water can make you burn more calories. It also increases the feeling of satiety to prevent mindless snacking. With zero calories, carbs and little to no sodium – what more can you ask for?

And results have been proven as well! Experiments have found that by just increasing water intake to over 1 litre per day for a 12-month period can help lose as much as 2.2kg.

Here at the Kinohimitsu office, besides the waterbottle, we love this app called Plant Nanny. It sends you reminders to drink water by helping you grow a virtual plant everytime you drink! So you can see your efforts growing and get more motivated.

  1. Workout

Last on the list is to work out. Who doesn’t want some defined abs and a peachy butt? However, this resolution requires you to be determined and disciplined to achieve.

This may be you on your first day at the gym.

This could be you after a year!

For those looking for well-defined abs, think twice. Developing abs requires a whole lot of hard work over the duration of 3 – 20 months. For men, the body fat percentage needed to see abdominal definition would be 6-9% while women need to lower it down to 16-19% body fat. So get your fitness game on!

Lifehack: Hack your way to a home gym with a Yoga Mat

With a yoga mat in sight, you will be motivated to work out (even out of the gym) and get the body you’ve always wanted.

Keep your goals S.M.A.R.T

With this simple resolution making rule, you’ll definitely make it stick this year. Resolutions aren’t supposed to be simple as just ‘save money’. You’ll have to be more specific than that. With this S.M.A.R.T rule, we’ll guarantee that you’ll not be repeating these resolutions next year.

S – Specific

M – Measurable

A – Attainable

R – Realistic

T – Timely

Example:

I want to save $200 per month for 10 months to go on an overseas trip to Bangkok instead of just a simple goal of saving money.
