Why do we need collagen?

Do you know that our skin is made up of 80 per cent collagen?

This precious protein is the building block of our skin, and is responsible for keeping our skin firm and stop it from sagging!  Once we turn 25, we lose about one percent collagen every year. The result of decreasing collagen levels? Wrinkles, saggy skin.

Here are some reasons why we all need collagen:

1) Promote healing of injuriesCollagen is one of the body’s key natural resources and a component of skin tissue that benefit all stages of the wound healing process - and even your acne scars. Not only does it help to repair and rebuild connective tissues, which are crucial for healing and restoration of damaged skin cells, it also helps to strengthen the structure of our bones, muscles and ligaments.

2) Relieve ArthritisArthritis is an inflammation in the joints that can cause limited and painful mobility in our joints. It is associated with a breakdown of cartilage in joints and commonly occurs in the hips, knees and spine. Our cartilage is made up of four substance: collagen, proteoglycans, water and chondrocytes. In addition to being a key component of cartilage, the protein collagen is also found in skin and tendons. Collagen provide cartilage with its strength and help encourage new cartilage tissue cells to grow, relieving pain in the joints.

3) Reduce WrinklesAs we age, the collagen production in our body declines thus wrinkles and fine lines are formed. Consumption of collagen regularly helps to keep our skin soft and supple, and prevents the formation of fine lines by giving it firmness and elasticity.

4) Strengthens hair & nails, keeping them strong and healthyCollagen protein is also the building block of your hair and nails as well! Collagen helps to fight off free radicals that can affect your hair’s texture, growth and thickness.  With regular consumption of collagen, it gives our hair an overall fuller appearance by strengthening and improving hair growth while improving nail growth and its quality to reduce breakage.

To restore your production of collagen, stick to a healthy lifestyle and avoid harmful factors such as UV rays and smoking.

Make sure your skin has the nutrient it needs by taking collagen skin supplements to help support your body’s repairing process.
